This is the first book by Iris Johansen I have read. Perhaps this book is a model of Johansen's writing style: dialogue driven with minimal prose. Many opportunities exist to describe scenes at every different location in the book but the author limits the scene setting to two or three sentences. I don't know if this writing represents her style or a lack of imagination or laziness or perhaps a rush to finish a project. But the choice to eliminate prose also eliminates richness and complexity in the book.
The characters too are limited. They are one-dimensional. The reader only gets to know what is revealed in dialogue, nothing of significance is shared by the author.
What the author does give a lot of attention to is a plot that is over the top. I know this is a novel with a story line that is fictional but I expect some degree of plausibility which is extremely limited.
With so many books available to read, I don't think I will take any more time with Eve Duncan in hopes the second book has improved. Goodbye Eve!

I love all of Iris Johansen's books, but my favorite is the Eve Duncan series. I got hooked the first time I read this book. I look forward to every new book that is added to this series. The twist and turns are so quick and so unexpected....that's what keeps me coming back.
I started with A Killing Game, which I believe to be the second in the Eve Duncan series...not realizing there was a prequel. This is the first of the series, and readers are introduced to Eve Duncan--forensic sculptor extraordinaire. She is struggling to accept the death of her daughter Bonnie at the hands of a serial killer. It is a struggle for Eve because her "work" is to bring the dead to "life" enough for them to be identified and brought home to their loved ones; while coming to the grips with the knowledge that her very own Bonnie may never be able to do the same. In this tale, Eve has been sought out by John Logan, a handsome billionaire businessman. He needs Eve to reconstruct a mysterious skull. Although Eve specializes on children, John makes her an offer that the cannot refuse..and she is drawn into a web of deceit and intrigue with stakes so high that Eve at first finds all impossible to believe. Deception and murder revolving around the Oval Office? And the perpetrators themselves are above reproach, which means that no one can be trusted.....

A decent mystery and suspense novel, I just found this intro to Eve Duncan disappointing. I found the main character annoying at best, and just never found myself unable to put the book down. However, this author redeemed herself in my eyes in book 2 (The Killing Game), so I will continue on with the series.

I've been reading the Eve Duncan series since I was 12 years old and I'm completely obsessed. Iris Johanson was the first author that intrigued me to move from childrens books toadult series with thrills, tears, chills, gasps, staying up all hours of the night trying to finish the story. I've never been disappointed with any of her books.
This was a really good read. The story has a lot of twists and turns, was very unexpected. Deception, lies, murder, blackmail all at the highest of all ranks. Desperation was the key to it all. I thought Eve was very harsh at times. But really liked the way it all ended.
This is an intense, convoluted and complex thriller, involving political players at the very highest levels of government. It is also very long, but that seems to be what Johansen’s fans want and expect. She has several billions of books in print, after all.

This novel is a continuation of the tragic and uproarious life of forensic specialist Eve Duncan. A forensic specialist is first and foremost an artist. Yes, they have deep knowledge of human anatomy, particularly bone structure, but they often are required to interpret and to interpolate on the basis of fragmentary evidence. The character of Eve Duncan is at the top of her profession after a seriously troubled and fraught childhood. When she’s approached by a wealthy and prominent business man with a bizarre request, she initially rejects John Logan because she’s still in the depths of despair over the loss of her only daughter, kidnapped and brutally murdered. The location of her daughter’s body is one of the gritty threads that permeates the fabric of the novel.

Ultimately, of course, she succumbs to the wealth and pressures from Logan and agrees to join him in a search for truth about the true identity of a skull Logan intends to produce. That, of course, plunges Duncan and Logan into a maelstrom of double dealing, avoidance of death threats and assorted violence.

The character of Eve Duncan is a strong stubborn woman who is highly protective of herself and her circumstances. Her place in the series is secure, but the leaps in faith required of readers, are occasionally difficult to swallow.
I knew who was going to die by chapter two. Mysterious billionaire on a quest ropes in brilliant but damaged female scientist to help him (when she is not delivering forensic lectures with the enthusiasm of a textbook.) Throw in a government plot and some corrupt politicians, and what have you got? A trite, boring, lazy plot with derivative characters and no suspense. I was disappointed.
Finally read the first Eve Duncan book and I can’t wait for the next one. I’ve read the newest Eve Duncan books and good to finally get a chance to start at the beginning and get some of the answers about Bonnie. It’s also wonderful to meet Bonnie and see that bond she had with Eve.
I loved this book. It was definitely a page turner. I love that Eve isn’t weak. Some might think Bonnie as her weakness but Bonnie is what pushes Eve. She’s still raw and mourning the loss of her little girl but she isn’t weak. She pushes back when she’s pushed. Loved that bond between Joe and Eve from the very beginning and how they take care of each other. Amazing read. Highly recommend this book.
