The eleventh installment of the adventures of Kris Longknife, royal princess of the United Societies in a fairly distant future, continues a lengthy story arc that began four or five books back when the Iteeche—former enemies of humankind—ask for help when some of their expeditions into a region of space previously unexplored by either Iteeche or humans fail to return. Kris and her ship discover some planets that once had sentient inhabitants but that had been stripped of everything useful, including atmosphere, in the not-too-distant past, and in the last couple or three books encounters the aliens who live on enormous spaceships—the huge “mother ships” have populations in the 30–50 billion range. And they don’t have any interest in communicating, rather like the “bear-cows” in Campbell’s “Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier” books. If they see another spaceship they do everything they can to destroy it. In the last book Kris discovers a planet that’s in the path the “bastards” are currently pursuing—and that the native sentients are quite agreeable avian people (though they’ve lost the ability to fly themselves), and more significantly for her, a colony of humans on the world including her own Grandma Rita, who’s been missing for 80 years. Rita was also the wife of her Grampa Ray, currently the king of the US, although they had quarreled shortly before she disappeared. In the course of this book Kris is appointed Viceroy of Alwa (which doesn’t join the US but accepts associate status) pending confirmation by the Alwa electorate, which she gets, and finally marries Jack, all while preparing for the inevitable day when the “bastards” invade the Alwa system. And there’s a major battle at the end. Yet one more highly entertaining book in this excellent series. I’m not sure why it’s still confined to PB originals, but I’m not complaining.Tags : Kris Longknife: Defender [Mike Shepherd] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Longknife Book 11
Regardless of what name Mike Shepherd writes under, his books are well written and nearly always grammatically sound.
It helps they have an excellent story line. This is the eleventh (plus) in his Longknife saga. Just starting her sixth year in the Navy, King Granddaddy frocks Kris to Admiral with a permanent Captain's rank. Maybe King Grandda is the reason she's on a hyper fast track.
Kris and friends battle past carping, starving civilians and amorous coworkers, to take on the bug-eyed monsters, conquering 100 to 35 odds.
Good reading, enjoy the twists and submerged flight / fight.
This is the best book in a long time. The first half of the book was a scootch slow but it got in some much needed character development that had been skipped over in the previous books and the second half went off like fireworks. Kris Longknife is finally getting some of the credit she deserves for all her hard work as well as a Fleet to play with!
Wizband fireworks and fleet action commences! This was the best book in a long time and I'm glad to finally see the natural progression of the character no longer held up by questionable political maneuvers designed to put her character growth in stasis.
I can't wait for the next book, which isn't really something I could say about the last several! Go-go-go!!!
The Deposed King
Princess and Naval space fleet commander Kris Longknife faces one of her most difficult missions yet. She has to prepare the naïve natives of a planet for a hostile invasion by alien forces. Their infrastructure has to be built from the basics, but at least Kris has help on several fronts. Ships arrive from home full of supplies and personnel. A human colony barely etching a living on the fated world promises to join the fight for survival. And Kris’s security chief, Jack, does his best to keep her on an even keel despite their blossoming romance. Can she train her forces and deploy her defenses in time?
This story is another exciting episode in Kris’s adventures. The romance between her and Jack is a bonus, and so is the witty banter between Kris and her newly discovered relative leading the colonists. Yet despite her resources, she wonders if her fleet can prevail against an enemy who wants nothing more than to annihilate humanity.
It was a real chore to make it through to the end of this "book" (and I use that word frivolously when applying it to this thing) without tossing it in my paper shredder, but then I would have wasted the cost the electricity to shred it and it was not worth throwing good money after bad. I have been a big fan of Mike Shepherd (real name Moscoe) and have read every installment of his otherwise fun to read Longknife series. I don't know what happened to him when he was writing this one - it is as bad as his others have been as good. Has he run out of ideas for new ones? If so he should have quit on a high note and not put this out to sully his otherwise excellent reputation, and I think whomever was his editor at Ace Books on this must have had it in for him to have published this, or perhaps Ace gave this to a high school intern or maybe their romance novel editor to do their editing? I did not count the pages, but it seemed like over half of the book was wasted on the flimsy and awkwardly written romance between Kris and her Marine bodyguard, Jack that drones on and on and on and on for most of the entire book. It includes mind numbing details on how Kris unbelievably pretends there is no problem with a higher ranking officer bedding a lower ranking officer who is in her direct chain of command, their going off to a romantic hideaway and having at it, then their getting married, then their still behaving like love stick rabbits after they are married. Oh, as a by thought, Mike managed to scrawl a few poorly written pages for fighting some aliens that is not very detailed or clever in between what is otherwise a not very well written romance novel. Mike has truly jumped the shark with this. Shame on you Mike and shame on your editor for letting you do this.
