I am normally a very slow reader but managed to finish it in just two days! I bought this book to take on vacation and could not put it down! Her adventures are just too funny. Gotta love a girl who makes a summer out of stalking a famous singer!
This book is addictive. I read it through in one sitting. A unique collection of life stories written in a funny and self-depricating style. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever wanted to pursue each quirk of life with gusto!
"It's so sad to be all alone in the world," said the conniving evil Mrs. Meers as I watched Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore solve the girls-in-white-slavery caper in Thoroughly Modern Millie (the movie). Indeed, but knowing there are others out there like me - members of the PLU (People Like Us) - is a sure relief! Carlip takes us for a joyride of sightseeing her oft funny misadventures and sometimes sad adventures. Queen of the Oddballs is a great compilation of scribblins from a woman in search of herself, from smoking on the playground in 3rd grade ala Holly Golightly and juggling (and winning!!) The Gong Show to rubbing elbows with the Hollywood elite and finding a warm, safe place for her yearning heart. I laughed, I cried, I tore through all the pages and am now happy to recommend it to anyone and everyone.
I identified right away with the writer since I have felt "invisible" and "not enough" for so long, starting as a kid as she did. I guess that's why I still talk way too loud and used to do ballet on my front porch in a tiny town in rural Tennessee.

I felt an incredible sense of forward momentum in the book and knew that it was really headed somewhere the whole time (although the meanderings are delicious!). My friend and I used to put on that XANADU tape in the car at full volume as we zoomed off to "feed the cells" uptown at the lab in New York City. When you've sung "Got to Believe We are Magic" to cells you've done something! I loved that part of your book. Got to get ahold of that DVD and check out your juggling, etc.

Anyway, I knew the book was going somewhere but I never expected it to get where it got to (I won't spoil it for whoever might read this). It brought me up sharp and made me cry and open and love myself a little bit and love the writer very much.

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I chose this book, but I'm very glad that I did. Queen of the Oddballs is an interesting collection of stories from the author's childhood through adulthood. The stories are cute with surface points about her coming of age and realizing who she is and what she wanted, but what I enjoyed most was getting a look inside the life of someone who grew up in Beverly Hills. The experiences she had and her brushes with the famous were relayed in a quirky and fun way. And if there's any doubt, in the age of people distorting their memoirs, Hillary includes pictures at the end of the each chapter to back up her story.
Reading Hillary Carlip's Queen of the Oddballs is as exhilarating as a roller coaster ride at your favorite amusement park. As you travel the rails, spotting cultural milestones with each dip and turn, you'll grow giddy from Carlip's loopy landscape below. Hold on tight as she shares her adolescent sleuthing, fan fervors, and crazy disguises. And when the ride softens, during poignant love affairs, family reminiscences, and self-doubts, you'll stay aboard, wishing you could've been there to hug your new friend. And you'll be grateful Carlip hoarded mementoes, photographs, letters, and artwork, and for her generosity in sharing them with readers. Queen of the Oddballs is a great ride. Don't miss it.

But that she can write about them so brilliantly is even more amazing.
